for John McCabe
Seven works for piano specially commissioned by the Presteigne Festival to mark the 70th birthday of John McCabe and the bicentenary of the death of Joseph Haydn.
McCabe's name is indelibly linked with that of Haydn - not least because of the monumental and exemplary recordings of the complete Haydn Sonatas for Decca in the 1970s.
The Haydn Fantasies where first performed by Huw Watkins on August 30th 2009 at the St. Andrews Church, Presteigne.

“There have been many musical tributes to the great Joseph Haydn in his 200th anniversary year. But none I've seen have been more engaging and affectionate than the ones given inSt Andrews Parish Church in the charming old town of Presteigne, as part of the Presteigne Festival. Seven brand-new piano pieces inspired by Haydn were played in honour of composer and pianist John McCabe - 70 this year - whose own recordings of Haydn's sonatas in the 60s helped to bring these great works out of the shadows.”
